About Mothlight Press
Mothlight Press is a small independent publisher based in Minnesota, founded on the idea that some of the best stories are the ones that make ordinary places feel a little less ordinary.
We love books that are funny, strange, heartfelt, and just spooky enough—stories that invite readers to wander a little farther, wonder a little longer, and maybe look twice at what’s hiding under the refrigerator.
Bear the Brave is our first book. We hope it’s the first of many.
Small stories. Strange things in the woods. Probably cats.
About Jeff Smieding
Jeff is a lifelong writer, reader, and frequent observer of cats doing ridiculous things.
He lives in Minnesota with his family and three cats—Bear, Toast, and Moose—whose fictional counterparts have somehow gotten themselves into considerably more trouble than the real ones.
Bear the Brave began as a series of quirky observations about the cats. With help from his wife, Miss Emily, not to mention the enthusiasm of the young readers at Orchard Lake Elementary, the story grew into a funny, slightly spooky adventure about fear, friendship, and discovering that courage doesn't always look the way you expect.
When he isn't writing, Jeff can usually be found reading, wandering around Minnesota, inventing stories, or attempting to convince the cats that he’s in charge.
